Until 1974, de Hoge Rielen was a military domain. The architecture reflects that military heritage and connects it with the natural and educational landscape. On the one hand following the gradual renovation of the available military sheds, on the other hand with a reception building that draws inspiration from the shape and material of such sheds. A Master Plan should give de Hoge Rielen a new identity that is related to what the domain used to be: a military site in the heart of a beautiful Kempen landscape.

Link with the past

The architecture of a domain should not be entirely based on aesthetic principles. It should reflect a long-term vision, a link with the past and with the domain as a whole. De Hoge Rielen succeeds in doing so. But not without a struggle.
